Niles Chapter of the American Sewing Guild began the celebration of its 20th anniversary by hosting its ninth annual Spring Extravaganza May 14 at A La Cart Banquet Center. An exhibit of club photos and memorabilia was featured.

Members entered 41 items in a Style and Creativity Show with the Best in Show awards going to Patti Augustine for garment sewing, Gretchen Saunders for quilting and Denise Cline for an afghan in the miscellaneous category.

The youngest to compete was Julia Pitlik, who entered a skirt and quilt in the show. She is a niece of Kim Zolnier, a chapter member.

In the Trash to Treasure Challenge, where items were made from a recycled article of clothing, Effie Welsh captured first place with her denim bib overall apron; Cathy Chamberlain took second with a sleeveless blouse; and Theresa Campbell won third with a little girl’s dress.

Family heirloom linens were displayed by Mary Masciangelo, Lenore Antonelli and Debbie Maley, mother and daughters, who told the history of the items.

Barbara Rosier-Tryon and her mother, Laura Rankin, exhibited feed sack dresses. The dresses were made for Rosier-Tryon by her grandmother Mildred Rosier from sacks that once held food for pigs. Janet Grubb displayed a collection of uncut feed sacks.

Members participated in a Fabric Dash by running to select a piece of fabric taken to the event by another contestant.

Serving on the committee for the extravaganza were Virginia Hardman, Rosier-Tryon, Diane Wittik, Ruth Smith, Joan Dales and Cline.
