1 dead, 3 injured in North Carolina train crash

MINERAL SPRINGS, N.C. (AP) — A crew member was killed and three others injured when two trains collided south of Charlotte, N.C.

Hospital officials said the victim was dead on arrival at a hospital in Union County shortly after 4 a.m. today. His name has not been released.

Monroe Fire Chief Ronald Fowler said the two engines collided and as many as a dozen cars were derailed.

Some of the cars were carrying cooking oil, sparking a fire that was still burning late Tuesday morning.

At least five families were forced to evacuate their homes near the track.

Fowler said a second crew member was flown to a Charlotte hospital with serious injuries.

Two other crew members were treated at the scene.
