Erik Thorson, principal of Chaney High School, was placed on paid administrative leave last week, and the Board of Education will be notified of the reason during a closed-door meeting Tuesday, according to a memo obtained by The Vindicator’s broadcast partner, 21 WFMJ-TV. The memo did not specify a reason for the leave.

Night of Shopping

Relay For Life of Poland will have “Night of Shopping” from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Holiday Inn on South Avenue. Vendors include Lia Sophia jewelry, Mary Kay Cosmetics, Candles by Linda, Miche Handbags and Skincare Secrets by Yalonda. A portion of all sales will be donated to the American Cancer Society.

Cancer punch-a-thon

A fundraising event toward the fight against cancer will take place June 18 at Team Bundy Mixed Martial Arts, 38 Youngstown-Warren Road.

The punch-a-thon begins at 1 p.m. Kim Singiser of Girard is raising money to walk in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure event in Philadelphia this fall to honor her mother, Tracey Singiser, of Austintown, who died from brain cancer. Participants pledge a certain amount of money per punch and then tackle a punching bag for one minute. Singiser must raise $2,300 to participate in the event. All extra proceeds will go toward Susan G. Komen.

Volunteers needed

LIBERTY

Liberty in Bloom, a volunteer group that plants flowers throughout the township, is celebrating its 13th year.

This group, which is committed to work on beautifying the community, is seeking volunteers to help plant. Call the administration building, 330-759-1315. The project is funded through the year-round collection of aluminum cans at the trailer in the administration building parking lot, 1315 Church Hill-Hubbard Road.
