Students win Green Team poster contest

The students were rewarded at the county courthouse May 12. Eight students out of 1,246 entries from area Mahoning County public, private and parochial schools won the Recycling Division of Mahoning County Green Team’s 2011 poster contest.

Each poster described a recycling or anti-litter theme. All the first-place posters were made into placemats to be used at area restaurants and nonprofit organizations’ special meals.

On May 12, the students’ winning achievements were honored by Mahoning County Commissioners at the county courthouse. Terry Bishop, Dominion’s representative, presented each winner with an American Express gift certificate and certificates from the Green Team were given to the winning students.

The winning students and their schools are: Sierra Sebastian, Poland Union Elementary; Arianna Maillis, Campbell Elementary; Sarah Graham, Springfield Elementary; Alyssa Rapp, Poland Dobbins Elementary; Alessandra Protopapa, St. Nicholas; Sareena Sethi, Canfield Village Middle; Rachel Strollo, St. Joseph/Immaculate Heart of Mary; and Alisia Rivera, St. Christine School.

The following are some of the restaurants who will be using the winning placemats at their locations: A&W, American Legion Post 737, Belleria Canfield, Carchedi’s, Denny’s in Boardman and Austintown, Dino’s, Ellsworth VFW, Poland Friendly’s, Golden Rye Grille, Landmark, Operating Engineers Hall, Perkins in Canfield and Damascus, Saxon Club and Yankee Kitchen.
