Email notification to Joseph Slifka about being named a Siemens STEM Institute fellow ended up in junk mail.

But technology reminded the physical science teacher at Liberty High School to check the trash and that’s where he found the exciting notice. “My heart skipped a beat," he said when he saw what the email was about. “I was elated.”

And no wonder. Only 50 teachers nationwide are selected for the program that will be July 31-Aug. 5 at Discovery Communications World Headquarters in Silver Spring, Md.

The Siemens STEM (Science, Technoloyg, Engineering, Math) Institute provides an all-expenses paid, weeklong professional development experience for participants. A description of the event notes that participants will hear speakers including top scientists, innovators and intellectuals who work in STEM disciplines that shape and define the world.

Slifka said he received an email from principal John Young about the program and decided to apply. “It’s a way to keep my students up to date. Keeping their interest is critical. STEM disciplines are cutting-edge,” he said. Slifka’s physical-science classes are chemistry and physics.

Slifka said he had to answer three writing prompts and answer the question, “What technology do you incorporate in class and how?” in 60 seconds.

The teacher said he sees research and development as the keys to success in the future. “The top nations will have the best scientists,” he predicted. He said science, technology, engineering and math solve “real world problems.”

Slifka said after he returns he hopes to share what he learned not only with students but with other teachers in Trumbull County. He plans to update his blog, joeslifka.blogspot.com, while at the institute. Information on all Siemens Institute participants will be posted on the website, www.stem.discoveryeducation.com.
