Canfield library’s Baby Brilliant: Tales and Talk for 2s and 3s took a cue from the calendar and celebrated moms as the theme of the story time May 3.
Jane Adams, children’s librarian, chose books, rhymes and songs that revolved around moms. The story time also focused on discovering letters, especially M-O-M, as Adams had spelled out in large foam letters on a board for the children.
Adams started with the “Ten Little Fingers” rhyme and then read a book titled “Mothers are Like That.” She then led the children is singing a song called “Mommy” to the tune of “You are my Sunshine.”
“You can take these words home and teach them to Dad so you can all sing it to Mommy,” Adams told the children.
Adams continued with the book “Kiss Kiss” which focused on jungle animals kidding their mamas. Next was another song about moms, called “My Friend” to the tune of “B-I-N-G-O“, substituting M-O-M-M-Y in the lyrics.
The children then listened to Adams read “Piglet and Mama,” and sang “Thank You, Mom” to the tune of “London Bridge.” Adams also told the story of “Little Red Riding Hood,” with the help of a puppet and told the children a story about a mama and baby birds with the help of plush birds in a nest.
What seemed like the highlight of the story time for the children was when Adams turned on music from a Mother Goose CD and brought out musical instruments the children could play. They all thoroughly enjoyed making music, and lots of noise, with instruments such as the triangle, a hand-held drum, bells and cymbals.
To end the story time, Adams explained to the children that they could decorate a bookmark with stickers and crayons as a gift for their mom on Mother’s Day. The bookmarks had a star on top, to let the children’s moms know she is a star in their eyes.
