Animal Kingdom second at Preakness


BALTIMORE (AP) — Shackleford battled for the lead from the start and held off a late charge from Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom to win the Preakness Stakes.

Animal Kingdom, the favorite, finished second in Saturday’s race at Pimlico, followed by Astrology. The horse is owned by a syndicate that includes Canfield’s Bruce Zoldan,

Shackleford, who finished fourth in the Derby despite holding the lead for most of the race, posted a winning time of 1:56.21.

He paid $27.20 to win, $10.20 to place and $6.80 to show.

Animal Kingdom paid $4.20 and $3.60.

Astrology finished third and paid $8.
