The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a minor plane crash at Salem Air Park, 11718 Salem-Warren Road, on Thursday morning.

According to a patrol press release, a single-engine, six-passenger plane under the control of a 34-year-old man from Indiana attempted to land at the township air park at 8:30 a.m. but touched down just short of the west end of the runway.

The plane sustained heavy damage and came to rest on the side of the runway.

Two of the four passengers aboard the plane, ranging in age from 34 to 61, suffered minor injuries, reports said. One passenger was taken to Salem Community Hospital. All four are from Indiana.

Youngstown

The Ethnic Heritage Society will sponsor a presentation on the decline of Youngstown’s parochial elementary schools at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Newport Branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, 3730 Market St. The presentation, “A House Divided: Demographic Change and the Decline of Youngstown’s Parish Schools,” will be given by Dr. Thomas Welsh, society coordinator.

The presentation will describe the role that demographic change played in the decline of Youngstown’s system of parochial education, which once included 18 elementary schools. Between 1960 and 2006, all but one of these schools closed.

The presentation will draw upon material to be published in the American Educational History Journal and a manuscript Welsh is preparing for publication.

A business meeting will follow the presentation.

Motorcycle blessing

YOUNGSTOWN

St. Dominic Church on the city’s South Side will have a motorcycle blessing at 3 p.m. Saturday. The Rev. Gregory Maturi will offer a blessing, and then representatives of Harley-Davidson will review motorcycle safety. The blessing will occur in the church parking lot, 77 E. Lucius Ave., and free refreshments will be served. The event was postponed from last Sunday because of rain.
