Errors hurt YSU baseball in loss

UIC scored four runs in the fifth and benefitted from three errors and three walks in a 5-1 victory over the Youngstown State baseball team on Thursday at Les Miller Field.

The Flames scored the final five runs of the contest after YSU took a 1-0 lead in the third.

UIC tied the score with a run in the bottom of the third and took its first lead with its four-run fifth.

The Penguins (12-37, 7-14 Horizon League) could not capitalize on another strong outing from starting pitcher Phil Klein.

Klein allowed just two earned runs on five hits while striking out nine in six innings. He walked three batters, two of which hurt him in the four-run fifth.

With the score tied at 1, Klein walked Jacob McNamara to start the fifth. Nick Addison then reached on a bunt single, and Steve McGuiggan walked to load the bases. Alex De LaRosa brought in McNamara with a sacrifice fly, and shortstop David Leon threw out Addison at home for the second out. Leon had an error on the next play, though, and the Flames went on to score three unearned runs.

The Penguins didn’t get a runner into scoring position again until the ninth. The first two runners reached, but reliever Eric Wyman got Drew Dosch to ground into a double play. Greg Dissinger grounded out to third to end the game.

Erik Okleson threw two scoreless innings of relief for YSU.

The Penguins finish their season with a doubleheader today against the Flames starting at 1:05 p.m.
