Picnic planned

MINERAL RIDGE

The Youngstown Developmental Center is having a Memorial Day picnic from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. May 27 at its Central Training Building’s Mall, 4891 E. County Line Road. The picnic is for facility residents and their family members. Residents of the local community also are invited. The event begins with a patriotic salute conducted by members of the local Korean War Veterans group, followed by entertainment, games and a barbecue lunch at 11 a.m. For more information call John Trevelline at 330-544-2231.

Nutrition program

“Nutrition Before and After Cancer Treatment” is a program offered May 26 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at McMenamy’s, 325 Youngstown-Warren Road.

Donna Kopas, a clinical dietitian with St. Joseph Health Center, will present nutritional guidelines for cancer patients during treatment, guidelines for use of alternative therapies and dietary guidelines for cancer prevention from the American Cancer Society.

Red Cross classes

The Red Cross of the Mahoning Valley is offering a class on CPR, choking rescues and rescue breathing for babies and children on Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 8381 Market St. The cost is $55. Health workshop

The Trumbull County Health Department is offering a workshop on “Creating a Health Ministry: From Your House of Worship to Your Home” on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Shepherd of the Valley, 4100 North River Road in Howland. The keynote speaker is Janet Peterson of the Valley Parish Nurse Ministry. The fee is $10.

This program is designed for lay people, parish nurses, clergy, physicians, dietitians, counselors, social workers and those interested in starting a health ministry. It is funded by the Preventive Health and Health Services Block Grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and administered by the Ohio Department of Health, Bureau of Health Promotion and Risk Reduction, Creating Healthy Communities Program. Nurses, dietitians and social workers can earn 3.5 continuing-education credits.

Walk for oral cancer

HERMITAGE, PA.

The fourth annual Oral Cancer Awareness Walk, organized by Dr. Dale Spadafora, is Saturday with all proceeds going to the Oral Cancer Foundation. Check-in for the 2.5 mile walk around Buhl Park, 715 Hazen Road, is at 10 a.m. at Shelter No. 4. The event begins at 11 a.m.

Community members can walk and raise money individually or participate as part of a team. There is a $25 minimum requirement for event registration.
