At Akron Children’s first Champions for our Valley’s Children celebration, the hospital in Boardman recognized those who have donated more than $3 million since 2008. In 2010, a total of 1,408 donors contributed more than $773,000 to support Akron Children’s Mahoning Valley. Major contributions include:

$100,000 from SJK Foundation to convert the third-floor waiting room into a special-care nursery family area.

$50,000 from Hine Memorial Fund to construct a family sleeping room in the special-care nursery.

$50,000 from Eleanor Watanakunakorn in memory of her husband, Dr. Chatchrai Watanakunakorn, to establish a fund for continuing medical education in the Mahoning Valley.

$25,000 from Youngstown Foundation, $10,000 from the J. Ford Crandall Foundation, and an anonymous gift of $5,000 for capital support for Mahoning Valley Surgical Services.

$151,000 raised during the second annual Miracles and Promises Radiothon broadcast, live on Mix 98.9 and 570 WKBN.

$70,000 in philanthropic donations funded the Garden of Hope with donors contributing toward naming opportunities, including engraved pavers, trees, benches; a life-sized bronze sculpture donated in memory of R.T. Beeghly by Gene and Carol Traynor; and a lead gift from the Mahoning County Medical Society Alliance.

$30,000 raised by the second annual “Koins for Kids” campaign led by Handel’s Ice Cream, with more than 23,000 students from 45 area schools participating.

$17,000 raised by Warren-based Covelli Enterprises Bagel for Babies.

BOARDMAN

The Beeghly family, on whose homestead property Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley stands, was presented the hospital’s first Champion for our Valley’s Children Award.

The award was presented Tuesday at the first Champions for our Valley’s Children Celebration Dinner by William Considine, president and chief executive officer of Akron Children’s Hospital. The ceremony honored all Akron Children’s Mahoning Valley donors.

The award, created to recognize donors to the hospital, was accepted by Bruce Beeghly on behalf of the family including his wife, Nancy; Joel and MaryJane Beeghly; Julia Adams; Ted and Dawn Beeghly; and Molly Roberts.

“We are proud of our growth and progress and commitment to the Mahoning Valley. But none of this would have been possible without the support of our donors and in particular the Beeghly family,” Considine said.

“We are pleased to present the first Champion for our Valley’s Children award to a family which has made an outstanding commitment to providing the very best in pediatric health care to the children of the Mahoning Valley,” he said.

Because Leon and Mabel Beeghly had the foresight to donate their family homestead, known as “Sunlawn,” to the Youngstown Hospital Association as the future site of a suburban hospital, and because of the continued support and generosity of the Beeghly Family, Akron Children’s has a new home for pediatric care for children and families of the Mahoning Valley, Considine said.

The hospital’s Beeghly Campus is off Market Street.

“Since 2008, our local donors have contributed over $3 million to support the mission of Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley. In 2010, some 1,408 donors contributed nearly $775,000 to support our local programs and services,” said JoAnn Stock, director of development for Akron Children’s Mahoning Valley.

John Zoilo, vice president and development executive director of the Akron Children’s Hospital Foundation, also recognized Youngstown Atty. Paul Dutton as a new member of the Akron Children’s Mahoning Valley Foundation Board, and thanked him and his wife, Sallie Tod Dutton, for their support.

The program’s guests received a frameable piece of art created by Brianna Davis of Southington Middle School for the Akron Children’s Hospital Collection.
