INDEPENDENCE

A thrower from Warren JFK was the only area athlete to earn an individual title on day two of the Division III track meet at Independence High.

Rocky Mitolo, a senior, won the boys shot put event with a toss of 49 feet, 8.5 inches. He beat out his competition by more than a foot.

Mitolo earned 10 points for the Eagles, who are tied with Badger for fifth place through six events with 17 points. The Braves earned eight points on a second-place finish by Kenny Bolyard in the discus.

Bolyard tossed the disc 136-8 with Mitolo right behind him with a toss of 136-7 to come in third.

Bolyard earned another six points for his team by finishing third in the high jump.

Warren JFK also had the fastest qualifying time in the boys 4x200 and 4x100 meter relays, and will participate in the finals with a trip to the regional meet on the line. The top four times advance.

Badger’s Greg Foust qualified for the finals of the 100 with a time of 11.48, good for second-best. Rob Seger of Warren JFK had the fastest time in the 400 semifinals, and teammate Carl Broadbent came in second in the 300 hurdles.

Morgan Hake of Maplewood finished fourth in the 200 and the schools’ 4x400 relay advanced.
