4 tennis players qualify for state championships

CANTON

The Youngstown area will be represented four players at next week’s Division II state tennis championships.

Those players qualified on Wednesday at the district meet at Weis Park Courts — singles players Michael Fredericka of Warren JFK and Mitch Marsocher of Salem, and the doubles team of Ken Duncan and Garrett Gardner from Poland.

Fredericka, the area’s lone returning state qualifier, defeated Ben Moore of Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary, 6-0, 6-1, and Brad Losey of Field, 6-1, 6-0, to advance to Saturday’s semifinals.

A senior, Fredericka will play James Meyer of Rocky River.

Maroscher opened his day with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Danny Krier of Kidron Central Christian.

Then he bested Billy Lennon of University School, 7-6 (6), 6-3, to advance to the semifinals, where he will play four-time state qualifier Colin Bernier of Canton Central Catholic.

Also in singles play, JFK’s Tyler Cole defeated Caleb Mayer of Lake Ridge Academy, 6-3, 6-0, before losing to Bernier 6-2, 6-0.

And, Michael Rotar of Cardinal Mooney lost to Meyer, 6-0, 6-1, in the first round.

In doubles, Duncan and Gardner defeated Adam Zimmerman and Tyler Flickinger of Triway, 6-2, 6-0, then beat Daniel Huany and Lukas Zalesky of University School, 6-2, 7-6. The Poland duo will play Dan Lubarsky and Sid Ahiya of Hawken in the semifinals.

Lakeview’s Zach McDivitt and Aaron Paczak won their first match, 6-1, 6-3, over Dan Johnson and Peter Scanniello of Bay, before losing 6-3, 7-5 to Mike Riley and Wes Noall of Gilmour Academy.

Also, Salem’s Taylor Fredrickson and Jay Linam defeated Reilly Kramer and Tyler Potts of Akron Hoban, 6-2, 6-0, before losing to Lubarsky and Ahiya of Hawken, 6-1, 6-1.

And, JFK’s James Rossi and John Nadar lost to Alex Aleman and Lou Konstan of CVCA, 6-0, 6-0, in the first round.

The tournament concludes on Saturday with the semifinals and finals.
