Youngstown ranks as one of the most sleep-deprived cities in the nation

YOUNGSTOWN — The city has made yet another list, but this one isn’t about jobs.

It’s about sleeplessness.

Youngstown was ranked the 12th most sleep-deprived city in America, according to a list compiled by the website The Daily Beast and consumer researcher Experian Simmons, which provided a city-by-city tally of sleep-survey data.

The study says 7.9 percent of city residents experienced insomnia in the past year and 8.5 percent used headache or pain relievers for sleeplessness.

Three percent of residents used prescription drugs for insomnia.

Jennifer Murdock, marketing representative at CrossRoads Sleep Disorders Center, 721 Boardman-Poland Road in Boardman, said it’s difficult to agree or disagree with the study, but said some Youngstown residents have sleeping problems.

“There are hundreds of Youngstown residents suffering from some form of insomnia,” she said. “For most, it’s transient and usually induced by stress, excitement, and pain.”

Charleston, W.Va., was named America’s most sleep-deprived city. Dayton (third), Pittsburgh (14th), Columbus (19th), Johnstown, Pa., (20th) and Cincinnati (26th) were other Ohio or western Pennsylvania cities that made the list.
