Records show ex-Ohio elections chief owes charities

COLUMBUS (AP) — Federal records indicate Ohio’s former elections chief has not paid most of the $15,000 she pledged to charity for using equipment from her state campaign in her unsuccessful run for the U.S. Senate.

The Columbus Dispatch reports that records filed with U.S. election regulators show former Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner has given just $4,000, and none of that within the past 12 months.

Brunner pledged to make the donation last year so her Senate campaign could use $15,000 worth of office equipment and supplies from her winning race for secretary of state.

Federal rules prohibit a candidate from directly using state campaign assets to finance runs for federal office.

Brunner tells the newspaper her campaign obligations will be met in what she describes as “good time.”
