In recognition of its year of service, the Rotary Club of Austintown received a number of awards at the annual District 6650 conference recently in Canton.

Susan Leetch, club president, was awarded a desk pen set and certificate as she received the Governor’s Recognition of Effective and Achievement Award.

The Jack Vogel Award for Public Relations went to the club for its promotion of Rotary and its activities through newspapers.

The club also was the recipient of the Emmett Riley Award for Literacy Promotion. The club earned the award through its efforts in sponsoring the cost of Woodside Reads, the donation of books weekly to the library at Woodside School, and for the distribution of dictionaries to students in the third grade at Austintown public and parochial schools and Lake Milton schools, an ongoing project for the past 10 years.

The 48 Rotary clubs in District 6650 competed for the awards, which were presented by District Governor Jim Russell of Canton.

At the May 2 meeting of the Rotary Club at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center in Canfield, the speaker was Roan Craig, center director. She said Austintown sends the largest number of students to the center each year. There, 700 are enrolled for day classes, and between 1200 and 2000 are enrolled for adult evening classes. She said the new dining room and the Joyce Brooks Conference Room at the center are available for parties or large meetings.

Craig was honored with a book, which will be donated by Rotary to the library at Woodside School.

Matt Pitzer, the center’s chef, and his students prepared and served lunch.
