West PTA gives teachers more than PB&J

West third grade teachers Marcy Hughes (left) and Greg McAtee definitely felt appreciated during the appreciation lunch. The teachers shared that they usually one have time to eat a granola bar or yogurt, so their May 2 meal was indeed special.

West Elementary third-grade teacher Greg McAtee doesn’t have much time for lunch during a typical day.

“I usually eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich when I get a minute. This is wonderful,” said McAtee, a third-grade teacher.

But on May 2, McAtee and his peers at West enjoyed quite the spread, courtesy of the school’s PTA. The group took advantage of Teacher Appreciation Week May 2-6 to honor the teachers with a special lunch.

The responsibility to plan the thank-you lunch goes to the PTA secretary every year, and this year, Sue Fellows took the reins.

“In the PTA, we work closely with the teachers here at West and we very much appreciate the work they do for our kids. They work hard, and all go above what they’re required to do. They make West a great school and this is the least we can do to thank them,” Fellows said of the event.

Teachers, secretaries, cafeteria workers and any other employees were all welcome to grab some food from a catered meal from Scarsella’s Restaurant that included pasta, vegetables and salad.

The meal was served in the school’s auditorium, which was set up with tables and place settings.

As an extra gift, four lucky teachers won the floral centerpieces decorating each table in a random drawing.

The teachers were definitely feeling the love.

“Mine is usually a granola bar and some yogurt,” added fellow third-grade teacher Marcy Hughes. “We’re usually so busy we hardly have time to eat, so we came down early and really enjoyed this meal. It’s definitely better than our normal snacks and we’re really thankful the PTA provided it for us.”
