Poland netters fall to rival
Poland’s varsity tennis team lost to Canfield 3-2 on May 4.
Poland’s Garrett Gadner defeated Mark Dalvin in two sets — 6-4 and 6-3.
In doubles play, David Shoffstaff and Ryan Colcagni were victorious over Canfield’s Jared Hofsess and Ryan Kaleel in three close sets — 6-4, 5-7 and 7-5.
Three Poland players make college choices
Three Poland High School school football players have announced their college choices.
John Medina will play at Geneva, David Bobby will play at Waynesburg and Nick Sebastian will play football at Hiram.
Baseball squad falls to Niles
The Poland baseball team fell to All-American Conference rival Niles 6-2 on Monday.
For Poland, Chris Elliott drove in both runs.
Softball team beats Latrobe 1-0
Taylor Miokocic’s RBI-single in the bottom of the sixth inning accounted for the only run of the game as the Poland softball team defeated Latrobe 1-0 on Monday.
Erin Gabriel (10-1) was masterful on the mound for the Bulldogs, striking out 15 batters and allowing just one hit.
It was her lead-off single in the sixth inning that led to the only run of the game. Gabriel advanced to second base on a throwing error after a single.
She was replaced by courtesy runner Meredith Tesone, who came around to score on Miokocic’s hit.
YMCA hosts triathlon May 15
The annual Sprint Distance Triathlon returns to the Valley May 15 at the D.D. & Velma Davis Family YMCA at 7:30 a.m.
The event challenges participants with a 500-yard swim in the Y pools, 14.5-mile scenic bike course and 5K run through neighborhood streets.
This year’s event features the addition of a men’s, women’s and mixed team division for those who would like to participate in just a portion of the race.
Race slots are limited. Participants can register in person at the Y or download a race application online at www.youngstownymca.org.
There is no day of race registration. Registration fees are $40 for Steel Valley Tri Club members and $45 for all others. For information, call Tom Grantonic at 330-480-5656.
Mixed doubles tournament
The Youngstown City Mixed Doubles Bowling Tournament will take place at Amron Lanes in Canfield May 20-May 29.
