Library’s teen superheroes save the day
The world was safe once again thanks to Julia Delbene, who found the doomsday device hidden in the Poland Library activity room and successfully dismantled it.

In case you didn’t know it, April 28 was National Superhero Day.
It might not be an oft-celebrated holiday to some, but for the teenagers of the Mahoning County Library’s Teen Advisory Board (TAB), the day was a big deal. The group celebrated its love for superheroes — in comic books and Manga — by throwing an April 28 party at Poland library called “Comixtreme!”
“The teen advisory board volunteers their time to give us ideas for events, pick out works in which the library might be lacking, and review young adult books that we carry in the library,” explained TAB adviser Cindy Beach. “This is a reward for them. I’m here to make sure everything goes smoothly, but every part of the event today was planned by our teens.”
The kids of TAB had an exciting two hours of activities planned. Guests were told to dress in costume as their favorite superhero or comic book character and were told as they walked into Poland’s activity room that there was a doomsday device hidden somewhere in the space that they had to find before the event ended.
Although the event started with an ominous task, there was still fun to be had with the life-size monopoly game, hero/villain relay race, comic bookmark craft station and a comic book villain archery contest.
Kristyn Wolf helped plan the event with TAB.
“We made it look easy now, but this took us six months to plan and execute,” Wolf admitted with a laugh. “Not everyone is as obsessed with comics as I am, but we all worked together to make it fun for everyone.”
With the clock ticking away, it was Julia Delbene who found the doomsday device and saved humanity that day. Delbene was new to TAB events, but said her experience was a positive one.
“I came with a friend today, and I’m having a lot of fun! I read adventure series more than comics, but this makes them look pretty fun. TAB seems like an awesome program,” Delbene shared.
