On April 13, Dobbins Elementary enjoyed a fun day of environmentally-friendly games and lessons in honor of Earth Day.

“We’d like to think that every day is Earth Day here at Dobbins,” principal Cheryl Borovitcky shared before the events began.

“However, we do welcome the Green Team on this day every year to learn about new ways to celebrate and protect the earth,” Borovitcky added.

The Green Team’s environmental educator Peg Flynn visited Dobbins the morning of April 13 to share her knowledge on recycling and other earth-friendly activities to each grade level at Dobbins.

The school’s kindergartners were treated to a story time and made flower bouquets out of egg cartons, while the first-graders learned about the process of composting.

For the second-graders, Flynn brought a felt board that displayed a park covered with litter.

“The park board really shows the kids what litter can do to a public place — in the scene, there are ducks stuck in soda can rings, gum stuck on the ground, the litter of park guests. The students come up and take away the litter and see how beautiful the place becomes,” Flynn explained of the second-grader’s project.

The school’s third-graders were treated to environmental bingo, and the fourth-graders participated in a recycling relay race.

The fourth graders, in two relay teams, had to take objects and decide if it belonged in trash bag or the recycling bin.

“It’s great to recycle,” Flynn explained before the race began, “but it’s better to know to put the right thing in the right place.”

Although the day included a lot of fun and games, Flynn simply hoped the kids learned a few new things.

“I just hope that the Green Team has given the students a nice base of knowledge, teaching them not to litter, to recycle correctly, and to try out composting. Now it’s up to them to give it a try.”
