Canfield residents invited to camp
Greasel Park is hosting a Canfield City Summer Park program June 13 through July 1 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day.
The camp is for ages 6 to 12 and a birth certificate is necessary for younger children to provide proof of age.
Children should bring their own lunches. There will be crafts, sports and games. Special speakers from the police department, fire department, library and Experimental Farm will attend.
This program is for Canfield City residents and Canfield school students only. Applications must be filled out and can be picked up at Canfield City Building and brought the first day of camp.
Canfield student to perform magic show
Matt Stevens will perform “Magic Explosion” May 21 at the Canfield High School at 7:30 p.m.. The show is a Las Vegas-style magic show and will include appearances, vanishes, extreme slight of hand, large scale illusions, levitations, escapes and comedy.
This event is a fundraiser for the Canfield High School Drama Club. Reservations are encouraged, but tickets will be sold at the door. Call 330-727-8900. Tickets are $5 for students and seniors and $7 for adults.
Church to host outdoor movie nights
Canfield Christian Church is hosting a series of movie nights throughout the next several months.
The first movie night is scheduled for Friday and “Letters to God” will be played.
The scheduled movies and dates are: “The Velveteen Rabbit” (June 17), “The Sand Lot” (July 15), “The Chronicles of Narnia” (Aug. 19), “Secretariat” (Sept. 16), “The Secrets of Jonathan Sperry” (Oct. 21).
The movies will be shown outside and start at dusk. Social hour with games starts an hour before. There will be free popcorn and drinks, but guests must provide their own blankets and lawn chairs. For information, call the church at 330-533-2246.
Golf fundraiser June 3
The Canfield Community Care Net is looking for golfers and sponsors to participate in its 10th annual Paul Baringer golf outing June 3 at Mill Creek Golf Course.
Since the summer of 2002, the organization has dispersed nearly $300,000 to help area families suffering from life-threatening illnesses. Brochures can be picked up at the entrance doors at St. Michaels Parish. The deadline is Friday. For information, call 330-207-6733.
Balloon release to remember
The Mahoning County-Youngstown Chapter of the Bereaved Parents of the USA will host a memorial balloon release at First Presbyterian Church, 201 Wick Avenue in Youngstown today from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. This balloon release is to honor the children who have passed away.

Knights of Columbus to host steak dinner
Knights of Columbus Bishop Fewnwick Council 13586 is sponsoring a steak fry May 21 at the Pacentrano Club in Youngstown from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.
The cost is $15 for a strip steak dinner with sides and refreshments. A cash bar will be available. There will be a 50/50 raffle along with a Chinese auction.
Support of this event allows the Knights to fund various charitable activities in the community throughout the year. Tickets can be purchased by calling Brian Antal at 330-690-8435.
Get caught recycling
Canfield’s recycling coordinator and the Green Team want to catch some lucky recyclers in the City of Canfield and Canfield Township during its “Get Caught Recycling Curbside” campaign throughout May.
Just recycle aluminum and steel cans, plastic bottles No. 1 through 7, glass jars and bottles, newspaper, magazines, phone books and junk mail at the curb on recycling day. If your curbside bin is chosen, you could win a gift certificate to a local restaurant or other business. Flattened corrugates cardboard must be taken to a drop-off site.
Italian Fest scheduled for July
The Italian Fest is set for July 29-31 in downtown Youngstown.
Festivities will begin July 29 at 5 p.m. with opening ceremonies, followed by the Miss Italian Youngstown Pageant at 7 p.m. The Miss Italian Youngstown beauty and talent pageant has become a tradition at the Greater Youngstown Italian Fest. The pageant includes modeling, speaking about Italian heritage and performing a talent.
There will be continuous entertainment and fun activities, including Morra and a pasta eating contest. A little King and Queen will also be crowned.

High honors for Canfield alum
Dayna Marie Love was named to the Dean’s list at Otterbein University for the winter quarter.
Students must be full-time with a grade point average of at least 3.60 to qualify for this distinction.
Love is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Love of Canfield.
New counseling practice opens
Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor Nancy A. Bleggi, a Canfield resident, opened a private practice at 319 North Main St. in Columbiana. Sessions will be available for children, adolescents and adults. She will help clients deal with personal, family and marital issues, including anger, anxiety, depression, domestic violence, grief and other concerns.
Bleggi has a Master’s degree in counseling and several years of one-to-one and group sessions.

Master Park expands two locations
Master Park is expanding his martial arts studio to include the space used by the old Boardman Oreck store. Children, ladies, seniors and families can exercise and rent this space for birthday parties or educational programs.

Tales to tails
Sign up to read to a registered therapy dog, which helps develop reading skills, promotes confidence and encourages a love of reading, at the Canfield branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County Monday at 6:30 p.m.
Readers of all levels and abilities are welcome Bring a book of your choice.
Dogs are provided by K-9s for Compassion, registered Delta Society therapy dogs.

Spring cleaning sale planned
Canfield Christian Church, 123 S. Broad St., will host a spring cleaning sale Friday and May 21 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Concessions will be available. All unsold items will be donated to help local agencies.
MCCTC to host summer camp
The Mahoning County Career and Technical Center will give students preparing for grades seven through nine the chance to explore new careers this summer with its annual summer camp June 20-24 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Snacks are provided daily and a special luncheon will be at the end of the week.

Bond with your babies
The Canfield branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County is hosting “Baby Brilliant: Bonding with Babies and Books” for babies 6-23 months Mondays at 10 a.m.
The event includes developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child become a successful reader.
This program is available for children ages 2 and 3 Tuesdays in May at 10 a.m. and for children ages 4 and 5 Tuesdays in May at 1:30 p.m.
Band rehearsals open to the community
Musicians from the Valley are welcome to attend rehearsals with the Canfield Community Concert Band. The band meets every Tuesday evening at Canfield High School.

St. Elizabeth’s hosts May golf outing
St. Elizabeth Health Center will host its fourth annual Trauma Service Golf Outing May 22 at Pine Lakes Golf Course in Hubbard.
Registration will begin at 7 a.m. with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. The cost is $75 per single player or $300 per foursome and includes golf, cart, prizes and food. Cash prizes will be awarded.

Grocery stores help Wounded Warriors
Three local Nemenz IGA’s will participate in a national cause marketing initiative to raise money for Wounded Warrior Project.
Locations include 2980 McCartney Road, Youngstown; 8 N. Broad St., Canfield; and 655 Creed St., Struthers.
During this national promotion, from May 27 through Sept. 5, IGA will donate 10 cents from the sale of every specially-marked case of IGA brand water to Wounded Warrior Project, an organization whose mission is to honor and empower wounded warriors.
New evening hours offered
The D.D. and Velma Davis Education and Visitor Center will be open to visitors Wednesday evenings until 8 p.m. throughout August. The Garden Caf will be open until 7 p.m. during summer evenings at Fellows Riverside Gardens.

Learn what it takes to prepare these unusual animals for showing at the Canfield Fair. See how llamas are sheared, used as pack animals and watch them maneuver through an obstacle course.

The Greater Youngstown Italian Festival scheduled for July 29-31 in downtown Youngstown is accepting applications for the Italian Man and Woman of the Year.

Help clean up America
Individuals, neighborhoods, civic groups, youth groups, garden clubs, athletic teams and businesses in Canfield are encouraged to join in the Keep the Mahoning Valley Beautiful annual cleanup through May 31.
The Mahoning County Green Team will supply the vests, bags, gloves, release forms and other clean-up materials. Cleanups must be conducted on public lands only, such as vacant lots, streets, stretches of highway, medians, parks or waterfronts.
