Most of the female residents of Boardman Shepherd of the Valley are mothers and have become grandmothers many times over. Nonetheless, it was still a treat for the ladies of the facility to celebrate a Mother’s Day tea with their families on May 8.
“It’s very exciting to welcome our residents’ families,” shared activity director Joan Testa. “This is a nice, relaxed event to kick off national nursing home week, where we have a wealth of activities planned.”
The event welcomed children and grandchildren who live locally, and others who live as far away as New York. The families enjoyed tea and strawberry cheesecake and were entertained by the singing of Rachell Joy.
That Mother’s Day morning, many of the guests thought about what their mothers have taught them.
Anna Beckett came to Boardman Shepherd of the Valley to visit her mom, Kathren Chaky.
“I admire my mother’s emotional strength. Her and my father brought our family over from the Ukraine a long time ago and that took a lot of bravery. She’s raised two very strong daughters because she led by example,” Beckett shared about her mother.
Pauli Melnick said she learned how to be assertive from her mom, Marty Angelo.
“My mom is a total spitfire. She taught me to stand up for what I want and not be afraid of what others think,” Melnick shared.
Testa was glad to see the families bonding that morning.
“We’re very lucky to have a lot of family support here at Boardman. We’re happy to host events where we can bring our families together,” Testa said.
