Center and Glenwood combine for concert

The two Boardman middle schools will present a fifth, sixth and seventh-grade band spring concert June 1 at 7 p.m. in the Boardman High School Performing Arts Center.

This concert will feature the fifth, sixth and seventh-grade bands combined from both Center and Glenwood Middle Schools.

Admission/donations will be accepted at the door. Cost is $3 for adults, $2 for students and free for senior citizens and children under 10.

MCCTC to host summer camp

The Mahoning County Career and Technical Center will give students preparing for grades seven through nine the chance to explore new careers this summer with its annual summer camp June 20-24 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Snacks are provided daily and a special luncheon will be at the end of the week.

Knights of Columbus to host steak dinner

Knights of Columbus Bishop Fewnwick Council 13586 is sponsoring a steak fry May 21 at the Pacentrano Club in Youngstown from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The cost is $15 for a strip steak dinner with sides and refreshments. A cash bar will be available. There will be a 50/50 raffle along with a Chinese auction.

Support of this event allows the Knights to fund various charitable activities in the community throughout the year. Tickets can be purchased by calling Brian Antal at 330-690-8435.

The Italian Fest is set for July 29-31 in downtown Youngstown.

Festivities will begin July 29 at 5 p.m. with opening ceremonies, followed by the Miss Italian Youngstown Pageant at 7 p.m. The Miss Italian Youngstown beauty and talent pageant has become a tradition at the Greater Youngstown Italian Fest.

The pageant includes modeling, speaking about Italian heritage and performing a talent.

There will be continuous entertainment and fun activities, including Morra and a pasta eating contest. A little King and Queen will also be crowned.

Balloon release to remember

The Mahoning County-Youngstown Chapter of the Bereaved Parents of the USA will host a memorial balloon release at First Presbyterian Church, 201 Wick Avenue in Youngstown today from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

This balloon release is to honor the children who have passed away.

Boardman graduate sworn in as firefighter

Ryan Beck, a 2002 graduate of Boardman High School, was sworn in as a Firefighter/EMT for the Washington, D.C. Fire Department during a two-hour ceremony at the House of Representatives Jan. 28.

Beck was assigned to Engine 2 Squad 1, the Chinatown Express, located in the Chinatown district of Washington, D.C. He served four years in N. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina Fire and Rescue Departments and currently resides in Maryland.

High honor for Boardman alum

Boardman High School graduate Kayla Szabo was inducted into the Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society April 23 at Duquesne University.

She is a first-year pharmacy student at Duquesne University with a 3.85 G.P.A.

Master Park expands two locations

Master Park is expanding his martial arts studio to include the space used by the old Boardman Oreck store.

Children, ladies, seniors and families can exercise and rent this space for birthday parties or educational programs.

Master Park is also expanding the Austintown Master Park martial arts programs.

St. Elizabeth’s hosts May golf outing

St. Elizabeth Health Center will host its fourth annual Trauma Service Golf Outing May 22 at Pine Lakes Golf Course in Hubbard.

Registration will begin at 7 a.m. with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. The cost is $75 per single player or $300 per foursome and includes golf, cart, prizes and food. Cash prizes will be awarded.

Registration deadline is May 12. The event will support trauma center outreach and injury prevention programs.

Do yoga at the gardens

Bring a mat and small blanket to learn a blend of energizing yoga styles from Heidi Suraci at Fellows Riverside Gardens on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout May.

Web site building workshop at library

From start to finish, learn how to set up and build out a Web site, including free or nearly-free options for software, hosting, design and visitor tracking May 23 at the Boardman branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County at 6:30 p.m.

Geared toward small businesses and organizations, the workshop will cover the following: software that allows you to create Web pages and blog posts for free, what free Web templates are available, what are the trade-offs between free and cheap hosting, what you need to know about buying a domain name, how to track visitors to a site, how to submit a site to Google and how to see which searches a site appears in.

May is amazing

Grocery stores help Wounded Warriors

Three local Nemenz IGA’s will participate in a national cause marketing initiative to raise money for Wounded Warrior Project.

Locations include 2980 McCartney Road, Youngstown; 8 N. Broad St., Canfield; and 655 Creed St., Struthers.

During this national promotion, from May 27 through Sept. 5, IGA will donate 10 cents from the sale of every specially-marked case of IGA brand water to Wounded Warrior Project, an organization whose mission is to honor and empower wounded warriors.

New evening hours offered

The D.D. and Velma Davis Education and Visitor Center will be open to visitors Wednesday evenings until 8 p.m. throughout August. The Garden Caf will be open until 7 p.m. during summer evenings at Fellows Riverside Gardens.

Beginner golf clinics offered

Two beginner golf clinics for adults will available Sunday, May 20, 27, 29 and June 3 at the Par 3 Golf Course from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The sessions will focus on swing fundamentals. Topics include putting, short game and full swing.

Learn what it takes to prepare these unusual animals for showing at the Canfield Fair. See how llamas are sheared, used as pack animals and watch them maneuver through an obstacle course.
