Villa Maria to celebrate Fair Trade

VILLA MARIA, PA.

Villa Maria Community Center will have a celebration of World Fair Trade Day with free Fair Trade coffee and chocolate tastings, a fashion show, film and more from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Fair Trade is about treating people and the planet with respect and dignity.

Villa Maria Community Center not only sells Fair Trade products in its in-house store, but also works with co-ops from global south countries to help them meet their community needs and educates consumers through activities and events throughout schools and communities.

A special traveling El Salvador Children’s Art and Poetry exhibit is on display at the center. The drawings and poems were created in honor of last year’s 30th anniversary of the martyrdom of the four U.S. church women and their work in El Salvador.

Annual luncheon

State Rep. Ron Amstutz, R-Wooster, will replace Ohio House Speaker William Batchelder, R-Medina, as the featured speaker at the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber’s annual legislative luncheon 11:30 a.m. Friday at the Maronite Center, 1555 S. Meridian Road. The event costs $20. Reservations are required by calling the chamber’s Jennifer Mascardine at 330-744-2131, ext. 12.

Person identified

NEW CASTLE, Pa.

State police have identified the person who was killed Tuesday when a car and a motorcycle collided on Pa. Route 108 in Scott Township.

Samuel Glies, 18, of Freedom, Pa., died after a car driven by Jane Tanner, 55, of New Castle pulled into his path from a stop sign on Heckathorne Road, police said. Glies braked and turned the bike on its side, sliding into the car, police said. He fell off into the road.

No charges have been filed.

Free screenings

YOUNGSTOWN

The Visiting Nurse Association of the Greater Youngstown Area, 518 E. Indianola Ave., offers free health screenings from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday, including oral-cancer screenings from 9 to 11 a.m. by Dr. Pat DellaGatta of Dental Works. Other screenings include blood pressure, weight and blood sugar.

Refreshments will be available. No appointment is necessary.
