Police will accept and destroy old prescription drugs

Law enforcement officers from the Trumbull Ashtabula Group Law Enforcement Task Force will collect and destroy prescription drugs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today as part of “Operation: Empty Medicine Cabinet.”

The officers will accept unused or expired drugs in original containers at the Trumbull County Waste Management facilities at 5138 Enterprise Drive in Warren off of Parkman Road, near the Route 5 bypass. Officers will count the medications and destroy them.

“We had great success at our events last year,” said Lt Jeff Orr, TAG commander. “This program helps prevent unused or expired prescription medication from getting into the wrong hands. It also has the added benefit of providing a way for unused or old prescriptions to be disposed of safely without harming the environment.”

Medications accepted include: pills, capsules, patches, gels, powders, ointments, syrups, vitamins, inhalers and pet meds. Keep drugs in original containers or in sealed plastic bags. Medications not accepted: needles, syringes, lancets, thermometers, IV bags, aerosol cans, hydrogen peroxide, empty containers, illegal drugs.

Other partners in the event are The Trumbull Couny Alliance for Substance Abuse Prevention, Geauga-Trumbull Solid Waste Management District and Area Agency on Aging 11.
