Ohio organ donor registry tops 5 million names

CLEVELAND (AP) — The number of people on Ohio’s registry for organ, eye and tissue donors has topped 5 million.

The Plain Dealer in Cleveland reports the Ohio Donor Registry was started nine years ago to help track potential donors. It gives people the option of signing up to be a donor online or through the mail.

Residents also can sign up in person when they apply for or renew a driver’s license or state identification card.

The newspaper says 3,000 people in Ohio are on a waiting list for an organ transplant.
