Jim Thorpe hall of fame to unveil 2nd statue of namesake


JIM THORPE, Pa. (AP) — A hall of fame named after sports great Jim Thorpe in the eastern Pennsylvania town that bears his name plans to unveil a second life-sized statue of Thorpe.

The latest bronzed statue at the Jim Thorpe Area Sports Hall of Fame will depict Thorpe throwing a discus. The first statue unveiled in 2007 showed Thorpe playing football.

Hall president Jack Kmetz said today the organization plans to erect a third statue in the next few years showing Thorpe playing baseball.

Thorpe won the decathlon and pentathlon in the 1912 Olympics, and later played professional football and baseball.

He died in 1953 and the remains of the native Oklahoman are laid to rest in Pennsylvania.
