Inmate dies at Western, Pa. state prison

CRESSON, Pa. (AP) — A Philadelphia inmate has died at a state prison in western Pennsylvania.

Officials at the State Correctional Institution at Cresson said today that 42-year-old John McClellan was pronounced dead in his cell early Saturday. The inmate had been found unresponsive in his cell shortly before midnight Friday and could not be revived by guards and medical staff.

The state police in Ebensburg have been notified and will investigate, which is routine in inmate deaths. But there are not immediate indications that foul play is suspected.

State prison officials say McClellan was serving a five- to 11-year sentence for a robbery conviction out of Philadelphia. He had been at the prison since March.

The inmate’s suspected cause of death has not been released.
