2 Valley teens earn Eagle Scout awards

Two members of Boy Scout Troop 25, chartered to Canfield United Methodist Church, will receive their Eagle Scout awards, Boy Scouting’s highest honor, at a court-of-honor ceremony May 18 at the church.

They are Anthony B. Bettile and Devon J. Doran.

Bettile, 17, of Fox Den Trail, Canfield, son of Anthony and Kimberly Bettile, was a member of Cub Scout Pack 60 at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Boardman where he obtained the highest rank of Webelos and received the Arrow of Light, Cub Scouting’s highest award.

He joined Troop 25 in September 2004 and has been assistant senior patrol leader, patrol leader for three terms, assistant patrol leader, quartermaster for two terms and historian.

He earned 23 badges and special awards of fifth-year Camp Seven Ranges Pipestone Award, first-year Camp McKinley Heritage Award, Firem’n Chit and Totin’ Chit. He also received the special troop award, Bob Roberts Memorial Backpatch, and Order of the Ants. He was an Ordeal member of Wapashuwi Lodge, Order of the Arrow, attended the Gettysburg Historic Hike in 2010 and the 100th Anniversary Boy Scout Jamboree.

For his Eagle Scout service project, he planned, designed, coordinated and supervised the installation of a 35-foot flag pole in Canfield Township Park to honor those who have fallen.

He is a sophomore at Canfield High School, where he is a member of band, track and field, bowling and football. He is a member of St. Charles Church in Boardman. He has also volunteered for YMCA Camp Fitch and was a member of American Junior Bowling Congress.

Doran, also 17, of Pleasant Valley Lane, Canfield, and son of Dennis and Cindy Doran, joined Cub Scout Pack 25 at Canfield United Methodist Church, where he attained the highest rank of Webelos Scout and received the Cub Scout World Conservation Award and Arrow of Light.

He joined Boy Scout Troop 25 in March 2006 and has had positions of senior patrol leader, patrol leader for three terms, assistant patrol leader, quartermaster and historian.

He earned 28 merit badges and the special scout awards of fifth-year Camp Seven Ranges Pipestone Award and Firem’n Chit.

He earned the special troop awards of Bob Roberts Memorial Backpatch, Order of the Ants, and 2010 Jimmy Jones Outstanding Scout Award. He was an Ordeal member of Wapashuwi Lodge, Order of the Arrow, attended the Gettysburg Historic Hike in 2010, and the 100th Anniversary Boy Scout Jamboree at Fort A.P. Hill, Va., earning the dentistry and railroading merit badges at the Jamboree.

For his Eagle Scout service project he planned, designed, coordinated, and supervised the construction of art-display stands for the Canfield United Methodist Church Preschool.

Doran is a sophomore at Canfield High School and is a member of Key Club, member and board member of Interact Club. He has been selected as treasurer of his class for his junior year. Through Interact and working with Rotary, he has volunteered with Relay for Life and clothes drives. As an eighth-grader, Doran was selected to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Washington, D.C. during a school trip to the capital.

He was selected based on writing an essay before the trip.
