NEW SPRINGFIELD

The VFW Triangle Post 2799, 3161 E. South Range Road, is offering a free veteran death benefits seminar at 7:30 p.m. May 17. The guest speaker is Susan Skrzynski of the Mahoning County Veterans Service Commission.

Topics discussed will provide widows and family members of deceased veterans information of available benefits and where to apply for them. Coffee and dessert will be served. For a reservation, call Caroline Hake at 330-542-0909 by Tuesday.

Beirut bombing

STRUTHERS

The Marine Corps League’s Tri-State Detachment 494 will conduct a memorial service May 30 at Peace Keepers Memorial in Struthers in honor of the Marines and the Navy Corpsman from Ohio who were killed in the Beirut barracks bombing on Oct. 23, 1983. The service is at 8 a.m. at the memorial located on Lake Hamilton off state Route 616. All military organizations and the public are invited to attend.

Three area Marines were among those killed. They are Cpls. Edward Johnston of Struthers and Stanley Sliwinski of Niles, and Sgt. James McDonough of New Castle, Pa.

In the attack on the Marines’ barracks, 241 American servicemen including 220 Marines, 18 Navy personnel and three Army soldiers were killed and 60 Americans were injured.

Designate a caregiver

WASHINGTON

On Monday, the Veterans Affairs Department’s Office of Care Management and Social Work will open the application process for eligible post-9/11 veterans and service members to designate their family caregivers.

Additional services for primary family caregivers of eligible post-9/11 veterans and service members include a stipend, mental-health services, and access to health-care insurance if they are not already entitled to care or services under a health-care plan. Comprehensive Caregiver training and medical support are other key components of this program.

Veterans may download a copy of the Family Caregiver program application (VA CG 10-10) at www.caregiver.va.gov.

The application enables the veteran to designate a primary Family Caregiver and secondary Family Caregivers if needed. Caregiver support coordinators are stationed at every VA medical center and via phone at 1-877-222-8387.

ADVANCED TRAINING

Nuclear power

Navy Petty Officers 3rd Class Brian W. Burbick, son of Dorothy Burbick of Louisville, Ohio, and William A. Burbick of Salem; and Robert F. Bischko, grandson of Beverly Bischko of Sharon, Pa., and grandson of Bob Bischko of Pittsburgh, have completed Naval Nuclear Power Training training at the Nuclear Power Training Unit, Ballston Spa, N.Y., qualifying them as nuclear operators. Burbick is a 2003 graduate of West Branch High School in Beloit, and Bischko is a 2007 graduate of Reynolds High School of Greenville, Pa.
