Canfield tops Tigers

The Canfield tennis team went on the road to defeat AAC rival Howland 4-1 on April 29.

In singles play, Howland’s Matt Madgar defeated Canfield’s Tony El-Hayek in two sets — 6-1 and 6-2.

Canfield’s Mark Dalvin defeated Robert Ames 6-1 and 6-0, while teammate Mark Stanislaw defeated C.J. Bart 6-3, 3-6 and 6-3.

In doubles play, Canfield duo Will Brown and Nick Debiec defeated John Morello and Andrew Ames 6-4 and 6-1. Canfield’s Jared Hofsess and Ryan Kaleel rallied from one set down to beat Logan Sturgeon and Boris Tatic 4-6, 6-0 and 6-2.

Cardinals defeat Bulldogs

The Canfield varsity tennis team defeated Poland 4-1 on May 2.

In singles play, Canfield’s Tony El-Hayek defeated Kenny Duncan in three sets — 6-3, 6-7 and 6-2. Mark Stanislaw defeated Mitch Dinanoios in two sets — 6-1 and 6-2.

In doubles play, Cardinal duo Will Brown and Nick Debiec defeated Zack Fortonato and Doug Pagacnite 6-3 and 6-2. Jared Hofsess and Ryan Kaleel defeated Poland’s David Shoffstarr and Ryan Colcagni in three sets — 2-6, 6-4 and 6-2.

Mixed doubles tournament planned

The Youngstown City Mixed Doubles Bowling Tournament will take place at Amron Lanes in Canfield May 20-May 29. The cost is $24 per couple. For information, contact Marilyn at 330-792-3436 or visit www.amronlanes.com.

Canfield tops Salem

The Canfield High School boys tennis team defeated Salem 3-2 April 28.

In singles play, Mark Dalvin beat Larry Gootz in two 6-0 sets and Mark Stanislaw netted a win against Andrew Piertraz in two 6-2 sets. Salem’s Mitchell Marocher defeated Canfield’s Tony El-Hayek 7-5, 4-6 and 7-6.

In double’s play, Canfield’s Jared Hofsess and Ryan Kaleel defeated Derick Shasteen and Mark Fredrickson 6-2 and 6-1, while Salem’s Jay Linam and Taylor Fredrickson beat Will Brown and Nick Debiec 7-6 and 6-2.

Kids Bowl Free

For a fourth year, the Kids Bowl Free movement returns for the summer.

KidsBowlFree.com serves more than 1.6 million children in all 50 states and Canada each summer, allowing them to bowl for free all summer long.

On Thursday, the official Kids Bowl Free Bus is stopping at Camelot Lanes. The official Kids Bowl Free bus tour will travel more than 14,000 miles across the country to spread the word.

More than 800 bowling centers participate in the program from coast to coast which provides kids with two free games of bowling every day all summer. Families must register online at www.kidsbowlfree.com.

The Kids Bowl Free Program has teamed up with the PALA program (Presidential Active Lifestyle Award) to help encourage youth and adults to adopt more active lifestyles.

Davis YMCA hosts annual triathlon

The annual Sprint Distance Triathlon returns to the Valley May 15 at the D.D. & Velma Davis Family YMCA at 7:30 a.m.

The event challenges participants with a 500-yard swim in the Y pools, 14.5-mile scenic bike course and 5K run through neighborhood streets.

This year’s event features the addition of a men’s, women’s and mixed team division for those who would like to participate in just a portion of the race.

Race slots are limited. Participants can register in person at the Y or download a race application online at www.youngstownymca.org. All applications must be received at the Davis Branch by May 11 at 5 p.m.

There is no day of race registration. Registration fees are $40 for Steel Valley Tri Club members and $45 for all others.
