Fitch track teams second at Poland Invite
The Fitch boys and girls track teams each finished second at last Saturday’s Poland Invitational. The girls meet was won by Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary (83 points). Fitch scored 80 points to take second. The boys title was captured by McDonald (71), with the Falcons (63) earning runner-up honors.
Fitch’s Ali Tolich was the field event MVP after winning the discus (144-11) and placing second in the shot put (40-02.75). Jen Shiley won the 300 hurdles (43.95) as well as aiding the Falcons’ second-place 4x200 and third-place 4x100 relays along with teammates Theresa Scott, Kaity Shiley and Jenna Yacovone.
On the boys’ side, the 4x200 team of Jay Jakovina, Tarise Wolfe, Rob Venters and Waylan Andrews won in 1:29.51. Andrews also won the 400 in 49.11 and anchored the Falcons’ 4x400 squad (3:28.23).
Mackall wins Greco and Freesyle state titles
Alex Mackall of Austintown won a state wrestling championship in both Greco and freestyle divisions at the USA Wrestling Ohio State Schoolboy Championships last weekend at Stebbins High School.
Mackall participated as an independent.
The tournament was also a state qualifying event for the USA Wrestling Ohio State Junior/Cadet State Greco and Freestyle Championships. Mackall was also chosen to represent Ohio in the National Schoolboy Greco and Freestyle Championships in Indianapolis in June.
Fitch softball loses to Lake
The Austintown Fitch girls softball team was defeated 7-2 by Uniontown Lake April 28.
Alana Callahan hit a single, double and drove in the team’s two runs. Carly Ortz and Amanda Callahan each hit singles and Megan Carney ripped a double.
Pitcher Amanda Callahan is 5-5.
Kids Bowl Free continues
For a fourth year, the Kids Bowl Free movement returns for the summer.
KidsBowlFree.com serves more than 1.6 million children in all 50 states and Canada each summer, allowing them to bowl for free all summer long.
On Thursday, the official Kids Bowl Free Bus is stopping at Camelot Lanes. The official Kids Bowl Free bus tour will travel more than 14,000 miles across the country to spread the word.
More than 800 bowling centers participate in the program from coast to coast which provides kids with two free games of bowling every day all summer. Families must register online at www.kidsbowlfree.com.
The Kids Bowl Free Program has teamed up with the PALA program (Presidential Active Lifestyle Award) to help encourage youth and adults to adopt more active lifestyles.
Davis YMCA hosts annual triathlon
The annual Sprint Distance Triathlon returns to the Valley May 15 at the D.D. & Velma Davis Family YMCA at 7:30 a.m.
The event challenges participants with a 500-yard swim in the Y pools, 14.5-mile scenic bike course and 5K run through neighborhood streets.
This year’s event features the addition of a men’s, women’s and mixed team division for those who would like to participate in just a portion of the race.
Race slots are limited. Participants can register in person at the Y or download a race application online at www.youngstownymca.org. All applications must be received at the Davis Branch by May 11 at 5 p.m.
There is no day of race registration. Registration fees are $40 for Steel Valley Tri Club members and $45 for all others.

Mixed doubles tournament planned
The Youngstown City Mixed Doubles Bowling Tournament will take place at Amron Lanes in Canfield May 20-May 29.
The cost is $24 per couple.
