Get caught recycling

Canfield’s recycling coordinator and the Green Team want to catch some lucky recyclers in the City of Canfield and Canfield Township during its “Get Caught Recycling Curbside” campaign throughout May.

Just recycle aluminum and steel cans, plastic bottles No. 1 through 7, glass jars and bottles, newspaper, magazines, phone books and junk mail at the curb on recycling day. If your curbside bin is chosen, you could win a gift certificate to a local restaurant or other business. Flattened corrugates cardboard must be taken to a drop-off site.

High honors for Canfield alum

Dayna Marie Love was named to the Dean’s list at Otterbein University for the winter quarter.

Students must be full-time with a grade point average of at least 3.60 to qualify for this distinction.

Love is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Love of Canfield.

New counseling practice opens

Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor Nancy A. Bleggi, a Canfield resident, opened a private practice at 319 North Main St. in Columbiana. Sessions will be available for children, adolescents and adults. She will help clients deal with personal, family and marital issues, including anger, anxiety, depression, domestic violence, grief and other concerns.

Bleggi has a Master’s degree in counseling and several years of one-to-one and group sessions.

Buy baked goods at sale

The Relay for Life Team of the Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA will host a bake sale today from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at K-Mart in Austintown.

The proceeds from the sale will feed into the Relay account and the team will be at the Boardman Relay May 13 and 14.

Master Park expands two locations

Master Park is expanding his martial arts studio to include the space used by the old Boardman Oreck store. Children, ladies, seniors and families can exercise and rent this space for birthday parties or educational programs.

Master Park is also expanding the Austintown Master Park martial arts programs.

Local author signs books today

Family Christian Stores, 7415 Market St., will host a book signing featuring local author Jeffrey M. Magada from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today.

Magada is the author of “The Good Life: You Can Walk in God’s Perfect Will.” The story focuses on the principles, underlying attitudes and lifestyle changes necessary to live the good life that God has designed for each of us.

Tales to tails

Sign up to read to a registered therapy dog, which helps develop reading skills, promotes confidence and encourages a love of reading, at the Canfield branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County May 16 at 6:30 p.m.

Readers of all levels and abilities are welcome Bring a book of your choice.

Dogs are provided by K-9s for Compassion, registered Delta Society therapy dogs.

Have a night out

The Canfield Christian Church, 123 S. Broad St., will host a Ladies Night Out Friday at 6 p.m.

Tickets are available until May 10 and are $9 for adults and $4.50 for girls ages 6-12.

Children 6 and under are admitted free.

The menu will include chicken cordon bleu, twice-baked potatoes, rolls, green beans, fruit salad, homemade pie, coffee and tea.

Spring cleaning sale planned

Canfield Christian Church, 123 S. Broad St., will host a spring cleaning sale May 20-21 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Concessions will be available. All unsold items will be donated to help local agencies.

Name change and new agenda for group

The Support Group for the Unemployed or Underemployed at The Ursuline Center is will reconvene in May under the title of Hope Works of the Mahoning Valley at the Ursuline Center. Its purpose will be to provide job networking and support for the unemployed and underemployed and will be facilitated by Joan Sonnett, Peggy Eicher and Eileen Novotny.

On May 12, the group will meet from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in the Prato Hall at The Ursuline Center, 4280 Shields Road. A representative of Callos Personnel Employment Services, Boardman, will have a presentation on getting the most out of a job search.

Terry Shifflet, student service specialist for eastern Gateway Community College, will meet with the group May 19 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the former North Side Hospital. Attendees are to park in the small parking in front of the former Tod Children’s Hospital and enter the door under the EGCC banner. The group will have access to a complete computer lab, the opportunity to take a skill and interest inventory and receive information on the local job market.

On May 26, the group will meet in Prato Hall from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. to focus on developing interview skills, avoiding red flags and common mistakes and emphasizing skills and strengths.

Throughout the month of May, library guests at the Canfield branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County can guess the number of items in a jar and win a prize if they have the closest guess.

Bond with your babies

The Canfield branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County is hosting “Baby Brilliant: Bonding with Babies and Books” for babies 6-23 months Monday at 10 a.m.

The event includes developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child become a successful reader.

This program is available for children ages 2 and 3 Tuesdays in May at 10 a.m. and for children ages 4 and 5 Tuesdays in May at 1:30 p.m.

Band rehearsals open to the community

Musicians from the Valley are welcome to attend rehearsals with the Canfield Community Concert Band. The band meets every Tuesday evening at Canfield High School.

St. Elizabeth’s hosts May golf outing

St. Elizabeth Health Center will host its fourth annual Trauma Service Golf Outing May 22 at Pine Lakes Golf Course in Hubbard.

Registration will begin at 7 a.m. with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. The cost is $75 per single player or $300 per foursome and includes golf, cart, prizes and food. Cash prizes will be awarded.

Grocery stores help Wounded Warriors

Three local Nemenz IGA’s will participate in a national cause marketing initiative to raise money for Wounded Warrior Project.

Locations include 2980 McCartney Road, Youngstown; 8 N. Broad St., Canfield; and 655 Creed St., Struthers.

During this national promotion, from May 27 through Sept. 5, IGA will donate 10 cents from the sale of every specially-marked case of IGA brand water to Wounded Warrior Project, an organization whose mission is to honor and empower wounded warriors.

New evening hours offered

The D.D. and Velma Davis Education and Visitor Center will be open to visitors Wednesday evenings until 8 p.m. throughout August. The Garden Caf will be open until 7 p.m. during summer evenings at Fellows Riverside Gardens.

Beginner golf clinics offered

Boat safely this season

A boating safety class will be offered May 14 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Birch Hill Cabin.

Ohio law requires that anyone born after Jan. 1, 1982 who wishes to operate a watercraft over 10 HP must successfully complete an approved boating course or proficiency exam.

Bring the dog to yappy hour

Enjoy a night old games at St. Michael’s

St. Michael’s Catholic Church is hosting a “Throwback game night” Friday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the St. Michael’s Family Life Center. The event is open to all local teens in grades five through 12. It’s sponsored by the Youth Collaborative of St. Michael’s.

Rivers Casino trip to help fight cancer

The 2011 Pink Ribbon Golf Classic committee is sponsoring a bus trip to the Rivers Casino May 14.

All proceeds from the trip will be given to the American Cancer Society.

The bus will leave from Fab Limo of Connecticut Avenue in Austintown at 9 a.m. and return at 6:30 p.m.

The cost is $25 per person and each player will be given $15 in play and a $5 food coupon.

Help clean up America

Individuals, neighborhoods, civic groups, youth groups, garden clubs, athletic teams and businesses in Canfield are encouraged to join in the Keep the Mahoning Valley Beautiful annual cleanup through May 31.

The Mahoning County Green Team will supply the vests, bags, gloves, release forms and other clean-up materials. Cleanups must be conducted on public lands only, such as vacant lots, streets, stretches of highway, medians, parks or waterfronts.
