Pa. mother suspected of killing 5 newborns set for plea

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A northeast Pennsylvania woman suspected of killing five newborns and keeping their skeletal remains in a locked closet has negotiated a plea.

Court records show 44-year-old Michele Kalina of Reading is set for a plea and sentencing hearing June 2.

Investigators believe the home-health aide secretly gave birth to five babies conceived through an extramarital affair with a co-worker and then killed them.

They say she gave birth to a six child of his in a hospital and put the girl up for adoption. The boyfriend was unaware of the pregnancies.

Kalina is married and has a teenage daughter, and had a son who died of natural causes in 2000.

Lawyers aren’t commenting because of a gag order.

Kalina is charged with homicide, abuse of corpse and other charges.
