Los Angeles Kabbalah Centre to help with tax probe

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Los Angeles-based spiritual organization whose followers include Madonna and other celebrities says it will cooperate with an IRS tax probe.

The Kabbalah Centre is a proponent of Jewish mysticism. A statement from the Los Angeles-based center today says it’s been subpoenaed along with one of its charities, Spirituality for Kids.

The Los Angeles Times reports authorities want to know whether the family that has run the nonprofit for four decades used some of its $260 million in assets for personal use.

One of Madonna’s charities, called Raising Malawi, also is under investigation. The charity cut its ties with the Kabbalah Centre this spring. But the Times reports both it and the center are named in a grand jury investigation.
