YSU softball to honor seniors this weekend
CANFIELD
The Youngstown State softball program will celebrate Senior Day as the Penguins host Green Bay in the 2011 regular-season series finale, May 7-8, at McCune Park in Canfield.
The seniors will be honored prior to the 1 p.m. start Saturday, May 7. The Penguins and Phoenix will play a doubleheader, Saturday, starting at 1 p.m. and a single game, Sunday, May 8, beginning at noon.
Former Penguins earn academic honors
DALLAS
The Youngstown State football team had four former student-athletes named to the 2011 National Football Foundation Hampshire Honor Society, the organization announced on Wednesday.
Stephen Blose, Kyle Banna (Canfield), Luke Matelan and Eric Rodemoyer were among the 671 players from 241 schools to qualify for membership in the society’s fifth year.
The NFF Honor Society is comprised of college football players from all divisions of play who each maintained a 3.2 GPA or better.
Mayfield gets invite to NHL combine
YOUNGSTOWN
Youngstown Phantoms defenseman Scott Mayfield will head to Toronto at the end of May to participate in the National Hockey League’s draft combine.
Mayfield is the first Phantom and one of twelve current USHL players making the trip across the border.
Mayfield dressed in 52 games and tallied seven goals and nine assists (16pts) in his second season with the Phantoms. Half of his point production came when the Phantoms were on a man advantage, three goals and five assists on the power play.
YSU to host 2nd-annual women’s football clinic

The Youngstown State football program will holds its second Women’s Coaching Clinic on Thursday, May 19 at Stambaugh Stadium.
The cost to attend the clinic is $25 and all proceeds will be donated to the Rich Center for Autism. The clinic will run from 5:30-9 p.m. on the YSU campus. The three-hour clinic is a great opportunity for female football fans to learn the basic concepts of every position.

Clausen makes choice for college softball
YOUNGSTOWN
Cardinal Mooney High senior softball standout Jamie Clausen has signed to continue her career at Notre Dame College in South Euclid.
Clausen leads the Mooney team in eight statistical categories this season. She is a four-year letter winner and a two-time All-Steel Valley Conference selection.
Griffin selected as NBA Rookie of the Year

Los Angeles Clippers forward Blake Griffin has been named the NBA’s Rookie of the Year by a unanimous vote.
Griffin received every first-place vote from a panel of 118 media members. The 6-foot-10 forward is the first unanimous winner of the award since San Antonio’s David Robinson in 1990.
Griffin led all rookies in scoring and rebounding while playing in all 82 games for the Clippers, finishing 12th in the NBA in scoring (22.5 points) and fourth in rebounds (12.1). He was the NBA’s first rookie All-Star since Yao Ming in 2003.
Titans QB Simms acquitted of charges
NEW YORK
New York City jurors have acquitted Tennessee Titans backup quarterback Chris Simms in his driving-while-high case.
The 30-year-old Simms was arrested July 1. A police officer stated that Simms was “zombie”-like and said he’d been smoking marijuana. His lawyer said the officer misunderstood Simms when he said a passenger had been smoking the drug.
