Maddie Dowling pitched a complete-game with seven strikeouts and hit a double to lead Southern past Sebring 9-4 in a high school game on Monday.

Rachel Coil homered for the Indians.

Kelsi Settle hit a triple for Sebring, while Karlie Meek added a double. Elaina Jurica singled twice.

Lordstown wins tennis league title

Lordstown defeat East Liverpool to clinch the N.E.T. League boys tennis championship on Tuesday.

Lordstown is 15-1 overall and 7-0 in the league. Steven Cribley, Zack Wells and Justin Prox won singles matches, while Robbie Ensign and Jared Enoch won first doubles, and Luke Pyles and Nick Johnson won second doubles.

Spartan runner makes outdoor championships

BOARDMAN

Boardman High freshman Mark Hadley qualified for the National Outdoor Track and Field Championship Meet in Greensboro, N.C.

Hadley will be one of thirty freshmen nationwide to compete in the ninth grade 1600 meter race. Hadley earned the trip with a time of 4:33, which was good enough for a fourth place finish Saturday at the Poland Invitational.

Indy 500 could have first Chinese driver

INDIANAPOLIS

Ho-Pin Tung will try to become the first Chinese driver to start the Indianapolis 500 when qualifying begins May 21.

Co-owners Sam Schmidt and Jay Penske say Tung will drive the No. 8 car for Schmidt Dragon Racing. Tung did test last fall at Sebring with the FAZZT team, which is now part of Sam Schmidt Motorsports.

Penske is the youngest son of Roger Penske, who has won a record 15 Indy 500s as a team owner. Jay Penske has had four different drivers start for his own team at Indy.

Tung’s car will be prepared and staffed by Penske’s Dragon Racing team.

Forty-three driver-car combinations will vie for the traditional 33 starting spots at Indy. The race will be held May 29.

Boise State responds to NCAA accusations

BOISE, Idaho

Boise State administrators say they have made fixes and issued a thorough response to violations alleged by the NCAA in the football, tennis and track and field programs.

An inquiry by the NCAA identified 22 specific infractions dating from 2005 to 2010, including coaches arranging summer housing and transportation for athletes to allowing one tennis player to compete before being officially enrolled.

The NCAA said the scope and nature of the infractions show the university lacked the internal controls to properly comply.

Florida police arrest Williams stalker

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla.

Authorities have arrested a man for stalking tennis star Serena Williams after he tried to enter her gated subdivision in South Florida.

Palm Beach Gardens Police said 40-year-old Patenema Ouedraogo tried to walk into the subdivision Monday night. Security guards asked Ouedraogo for his driver’s license and found he had been named by Williams as a suspected stalker.

Williams’ attorney, Malcom Cunningham, said he recently filed an injunction against Ouedraogo after he tried to contact Williams three times.

Saints meet for team workouts

NEW ORLEANS

Saints players have gotten together to work out at practice fields and weight rooms at Tulane.

Quarterback Drew Brees, who organized the player-only workouts, says that it’s all about doing what they can while they are locked out from their regular facilities during the NFL labor dispute.

Several players who showed up are not currently under contract but were with the team last season.
