Wrestlers Mackall, Scheetz win state championships

Alex Mackall of Austintown and Luke Scheetz of New Middletown won state wrestling championships in both Greco and freestyle divisions at the USA Wrestling Ohio State Schoolboy Championships last weekend at Stebbins High School.

Scheetz is a member of the Green Machine Wrestling Team, in its inaugural season. The Green Machine is dedicated to the memory of Jon Green, a local wrestler who was the Ohio state champion in Greco-style wrestling and qualified for many national tournaments.

Other Green Machine team members are Adam Green (Austintown), Vince Mancini, Jason Babnic, Brandon Rigelsky (Boardman) and Dante Ginetti (Poland).

Mackall participated as an independent.

The tournament was also a state qualifying event for the USA Wrestling Ohio State Junior/Cadet State Greco and Freestyle Championships. Green Machine Junior/Cadet members included Nick Mancini, Mike Carballo, Joe Cordova, Ben Kirk, Scott Glenn, Kyle Kondis, Matt Inghram, Jack Liggitt, all of Boardman, and Anthony Mancini of Poland.

Mackall was also chosen to represent Ohio in the National Schoolboy Greco and Freestyle Championships in Indianapolis in June.

Green placed fifth in Greco, Ginetti placed second in Greco and fourth in freestyle, Babnic placed third in Greco and fourth in freestyle, Mancini placed fourth in Greco and third in freestyle and Rigelsky placed fourth in Greco and fifth in freestyle.

All of the Green Machine Junior/Cadet wrestlers qualified for the USA Wrestling Ohio State Junior/Cadet State Greco and Freestyle Championships to be held in Cincinnati on May 14.
