YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown Department of Parks and Recreation says the Henry Stambaugh Golf Course, 202 Gypsy Lane, will open at 10 a.m Friday, weather permitting. Hours of operation will be 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Seeking funds

HUBBARD

Hubbard Township and city have applied for $4,000 in state grant funds for the collection and disposal of scrap tires. In the past three years, more than 4,800 scrap tires have been collected. Collection and drop-off dates will be advertised if the application is approved by Geauga-Trumbull Solid Waste Management District.

Barking complaint

SALEM

The Humane Society of Columbiana County 1825 S. Lincoln Ave., Perry Township, faces a minor misdemeanor charge for allowing dogs at its headquarters to bark. The complaint could bring up to a $150 fine. The case will be heard in Columbiana County Municipal Court at 8:30 a.m. April 7.

Louise Grande, who lives north of the society, filed the noise complaint last Friday with township police. She said she and her husband, who are both in their 70s, are tired of the barking. Jenny Pike, the president of the humane society, declined to comment.

Police checkpoint

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown Police Department conducted its first driving-under-suspension checkpoint for this year March 18 on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard near Superior Street on the city’s North Side. During the checkpoint, 391 vehicles were processed.

There were 39 vehicles redirected to a diversion zone for additional processing. Two people were arrested on outstanding warrants.

There were 13 drivers cited for driving under suspension (driving without a license). Four drivers were cited for other traffic offenses. Two people were charged with wrongful entrustment of a motor vehicle.

MetroParks event

YOUNGSTOWN

Mill Creek MetroParks will host an event as part of Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Month from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 16 at Fellows Riverside Gardens, 120 McKinley Ave.

Mahoning County Family and Children First Council is sponsoring the event in collaboration with Mahoning County Children Services, Mahoning County Help Me Grow and the Help Hotline Crisis Center.

There will be sessions for parents about stress management and coping skills, child rearing, nurturing, protecting children online and parenting children with disabilities. Children are welcome to attend, and there will be activities available for them including stories, games and crafts.

There will be free resources for the first 200 parents and children and community-service directories for the first 100 adults.
