Actor Paul Giamatti always has brought his own signature style to his movies. He’s usually the best thing in a bad movie, but he also can elevate a good movie to greatness. With his latest comedy, “Win Win,” opening in more theaters this week, here’s a look at Giamatti’s five best film performances.

v “American Splendor” (2003): As comic-book writer Harvey Pekar, Giamatti finally got a shot at a leading role, and he was tremendous.

v “Sideways” (2004): Director and co- writer Alexander Payne’s middle-aged coming-of-age tale about two friends on a wine-hopping road trip found the divorced, self-serious Giamatti bouncing beautifully off Thomas Haden Church as his overconfident, party-boy pal.

v “Cinderella Man” (2005): Giamatti pretty much stole this thing right out from under Russell Crowe — no small feat — and earned an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor.

v “Barney’s Version” (2010): Giamatti won the Golden Globe Award for best actor in a musical or comedy earlier this year for his portrayal of Barney Panofsky, the hilariously flawed hero of Mordecai Richler’s novel, a Montreal TV producer looking back on his life and the loves who defined it.

v “Private Parts” (1997): Howard Stern’s biopic — based on his memoir, and starring Stern as himself, of course — provided an early major role for Giamatti.

“frontline” (9 p.m., PBS): “Frontline” delivers a timely report with “Money and March Madness.” Correspondent Lowell Bergman examines how the NCAA Basketball Tournament has become a cash cow, generating enormous dollars for everyone except the players themselves.

“Body of Proof” (10:01 p.m., ABC): If you miss Dana Delany as much as we do, you’ll want to check out “Body of Proof.” It’s a new procedural drama that has Delany solving crimes as a tough-minded medical examiner.

Monstrola in finals of groom contest

YOUNGSTOWN

Mark Monstrola, meteorologist for 21 WFMJ-TV, has made it to the final round of Brides magazine’s Groom of the Year contest. Monstrola, 25, of Poland, began several weeks ago as one of 16 men in the competition, which is set up like a March Madness NCAA Tournament bracket. He is facing Victor Fuentes, 29, of Brooklyn, N.Y., in the title round. Voting is done online by the public at brides.com. The winner, who will be revealed Monday, receives a honeymoon package, a big-screen television and a wedding band. Monstrola and his fianc e, Shannon McGarry of Poland, have set a Sept. 17 wedding date.

Soprano at St. Pat

YOUNGSTOWN

Chicago professional soprano Valerie Guiliani will be the featured soloist during an hourlong program at St. Patrick Church, 1420 Oak Hill Ave., during its centennial celebration Sunday at 2 p.m..

Giuliani graduated with honors from Duquesne University School of Music and was involved with the Pittsburgh Opera and the Civic Light Opera. Also performing will be Julia McGuire, a junior at Slippery Rock High School. The concert is free. Donations will be accepted.
