Road projects begin in Struthers

STRUTHERS

The city is beginning some road and other infrastructure improvement projects.

Work on Clingan Road, which began March 3, continues. The project includes new curbs, resurfacing and a new storm sewer and should be finished by May, said Gary Diorio, the city’s consulting engineer.

The project costs $304,000, with $210,000 coming from an Ohio Department of Public Works grant. The city will pick up $94,364 of the cost, with $55,000 coming from the city’s stormwater fund and more than $44,000 coming from the permissive-tax fund.

Where curbs are being installed, residents are not able to use their driveways for a week, city officials said.

Residents who live close to Center Street can park on Grimm Heights, and others can park their cars on Babic Street, officials said.

The city also will resurface sections of street that need it most, Diorio added. They include Omar, Overlook, Garfield, Wetmore, Harvey and Helena. The resurfacing will be bid as one project, with an estimated cost of $75,000, he said.

The city expects to solicit bids for the resurfacing projects at the beginning of April.

On Maplewood Street, a deteriorating culvert will be replaced. The city will finance the $143,350 project.

Resurfacing on Fifth Street and Center Street from Lowellville Road to the city limits also will begin in late summer, Diorio said.

The $500,000 project will be financed mostly with grants. The city is picking up 20 percent of the cost. The Ohio Department of Transportation will manage that job.
