Youth wrestler wins three matches at state tourney

Austintown’s Drew Fairbanks (70 pounds) went 3-2 overall at the OAC Grade School wrestling state tournament last weekend. The event took place at the Covelli Centre.

Fairbanks easily won his first two matches 8-2 and by pin, before falling to Tommy Curtin, 7-0 to drop into the consolation bracket. He then lost his first consolation match 9-0 to eventual fourth-placer Josh Breeding of Burnett Wrestling Club. Fairbanks finished the season with a 43-8 overall record.

Hall of Famers named

The Austintown Fitch High School Hall Banquet is scheduled for Sept. 24 at Immaculate Heart Of Mary Banquet Hall.

Members of the fourth Athletic Hall of Fame Class include Cecil Duffet, 1945 basketball and track; Don Schnurraberger, (posthumously) 1949 football, basketball and track; Jim Pontuti, 1959 football and track; Paul D’Eramo (posthumously), 1964 football and track; Bill Jacobson, 1966 basketball and baseball; Mike Woloschak, 1972 football and track; Mike Calhoun (posthumously) 1975, football and track; Gary Barber, 1982 football and track; Matt Keller, 1986 football and track; Dana (Sulenski) Menendez, 1995 basketball and track; Dave Hartman, coach 1982-1993; Donald Dockery (posthumously), benefactor; the 1975 cross country team and 1990 football team.

Bowl Over Cancer fundraiser coming

A “Bowl Over Cancer” fundraiser will be April 2 at Arrowhead Lanes.
