Attempted robbery at Home Depot

Police are searching for two men who attempted to rob Home Depot on Southern Boulevard.

A store security guard told police that two men hid five zinc-plated door stops in insulation in the store, and then the younger of the two males concealed the door stops in his jacket around 11 a.m. Thursday, according to reports.

Police said when the guard confronted the two men, the older man ran out to a car, and the younger man dropped the items and tried to push and punch the guard before fleeing to the car as well. The car was last seen driving northbound on Southern Boulevard, reports state.

Pothole patching in Mahoning County

To patch numerous potholes, Mahoning County commissioners authorized the emergency purchase of up to $50,000 worth of cold-mix asphalt from Central Allied Enterprises in Canton.

The county engineer’s office exhausted the cold-mix supply it made, and the weather hasn’t been dry enough to make more, explained Marilyn Kenner, chief deputy county engineer. If the weather stays dry, a plant that makes hot-mix asphalt for more- permanent pothole repairs should open April 4, she added.

Deadline to rent space for North Lima event

The deadline for securing a place at this year’s Trash ’n Treasure Sale is quickly approaching.

The deadline to rent space is April 15, and the cost is $20 for a 10-by-15-foot area. The Trash ’n Treasure Sale will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 14 at Woodworth Park, off Western Reserve Road. A rain date has been set for May 21. For more information, contact the park board at 330-549-9552.

Fundraiser bus trip to Johnny Mathis show

A Way With Words Foundation is sponsoring a fundraiser bus trip to a Johnny Mathis performance Friday at Playhouse Square in Cleveland.

The $140-per-person cost includes the concert ticket, bus trip and a catered dinner at Sammy’s. The bus leaves from Fab Limo, 3681 Connecticut Ave., Austintown, at 4:45 p.m. Friday. The money raised will help finance the ROCcK Children’s Choir tour this summer to Washington, D.C., and cancer hospitals in the area.

Youngstown cleanup

The Ohio Department of Transportation and Keep Ohio Beautiful will begin the Great American Cleanup in Youngstown today.

Volunteers will meet between 9 a.m. and noon at the Youngstown State University lower parking lot on the corner of Lincoln and Fifth Avenue. The Western Reserve Transit Authority will provide free bus rides to cleanup sites throughout the city.

The Mahoning Valley Organizing Collaborative will have neighborhood organizing and leadership training from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. next Saturday in the meeting room of the main library of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, 305 Wick Ave.

Training topics will include building an organization through one-on-one meetings and neighborhood canvassing, narrowing problems into targeted issues, how to conduct productive meetings, effective communication tools and developing successful strategic campaigns.
