NEWTON FALLS

In response to an animal cruelty complaint, a police officer recovered two animal paws, possibly from a dog or puppy, from a trash can on the gasoline pump island at the Convenient Food Mart, 321 S. Milton Blvd. At about 6 p.m. Wednesday, a store clerk told the officer a customer had placed the paws in the trash can, police said. Police contacted animal welfare authorities.

Car falls on man

BROOKFIELD

A man was critically injured after a car fell on his head while he was working underneath it at 6:53 p.m. Wednesday at 7976 Third St.. Brookfield Fire Department said it did not yet have a confirmation on the 44-year-old man’s identity Wednesday night. He was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center. The man does not live at the address, but was helping out with the car, the department said. The department said the ground was soft and the jack slipped.

Television stolen

YOUNGSTOWN

Police are looking for the man who pointed a gun at a 28-year-old Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard man and walked out of the victim’s house with a 32-inch television. The man told police the thief, whom he recognized from the area, knocked on the door shortly after midnight Wednesday then pulled out the gun after the victim answered the door. The victim said the thief pointed the gun at him, demanded the TV, took it and walked away.

Candidates forum

The Newport Neighborhood Association is sponsoring a candidates forum for those running for Youngstown City Council’s 5th Ward seat at 6:30 p.m. today at Martin Luther Lutheran Church, 420 Clearmount Ave.

Boy beaten

YOUNGSTOWN

A Neilson Avenue woman told police her 15-year-old son was beaten by a group of eight other juveniles while the boy was in the Martin P. Joyce Juvenile Justice Center on Scott Street. The woman said her son was involved in the fight after being moved to a different part of the detention facility last week. He was treated for a swollen right eye and bruised ribs.

Tentative contract

POLAND

Poland Schools Superintendent Robert Zorn said Wednesday that a tentative agreement has been reached between the teachers union and the board of education. Details of the deal won’t be made available until the contract is ratified by the board and the union. The next scheduled board meeting is Monday night at North Elementary library, 361 Johnston Place.

Zorn previously said the district was seeking a wage freeze.
