COLLEGE FOOTBALL
Notre Dame: Notre Dame suspended star wide receiver Michael Floyd indefinitely Monday, a day after he was cited for drunken driving and authorities said his blood-alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit. Coach Brian Kelly said the suspension will not be lifted until Floyd changes his behavior and both the legal and university discipline procedures run their course. It was Floyd’s third run-in with the law over alcohol since 2009.
Alabama: Alabama opened spring practice trying to replace three star underclassmen and quarterback Greg McElroy and dealing with off-the-field issues involving two safeties. The Crimson Tide held its first practice in the aftermath of a weekend arrest of All-American Mark Barron on a misdemeanor charge of hindering prosecution. Coach Nick Saban says Barron “used poor judgment” in trying to protect someone else. Robby Green, who missed last season on NCAA suspension, is now suspended for violating team rules. Saban said any disciplinary action against both players will be handled internally. Other issues include replacing Heisman winner Mark Ingram, Marcell Dareus and Julio Jones.
Oklahoma: A little later than planned, Oklahoma is heading back to the football field. The Sooners started spring practice Monday after a two-week delay because coach Bob Stoops thought the team had fallen behind in conditioning with sessions canceled because of snow. Yet, Stoops said he’s happy with what he’s seen from his players approaching the spring and believes they’re on the right track after finishing last season on a four-game winning streak that included the Big 12 title and the Fiesta Bowl. “In the winter, their attitude has been much like it was a year ago in that they were a really fun group to coach because they accepted coaching ... they liked being on the field, they liked competing and they really have done that through the winter,” Stoops said.
