White hopes for more 300 games at Camelot

The Original Church League at Camelot has about another four weeks left in the second half.

That’s enough time for a member of the one of the oldest — if not the oldest — leagues to go out with a bang.

Secretary Burt White, 77, thinks it can happen.

“They’ve got the ball that can do it — any one of them,” Burt said of the possibility of a 300 by a few of his league’s top men.

“I’m hoping one of them will do it before the season ends.”

The league has had 300s before, including two in one year by Edward Gould about 4-5 years ago.

“He could do it again,” Burt said of Gould, who’s still in the league.

Adam Hoover had a 278 the first week of the season, then tapered off before registering 252 lately. White isn’t counting Hoover out.

“He’s still working on it, so he may have one before we’re finished.”

The next-best single is 269 by Dennis O’Hare. A sprinkling of 259s and 257s follow.

“They’re coming along,” White said, “although time is running out.”

O’Hare has top average of 200.

“He’s down from last year, but he’s still high average,” White said. “He usually gets high average every year,” Burt said of O’Hare, a longtime member of the league and a member of the CCC (Central Christian Church) No. 1 team of which White is captain.

Other top averages are Dave Hoover (192), Jeff Fuller (190), Adam Hoover and David Justice (187s) and Dick Hartzell (186).

“It’s always been a handicap league,” Burt said of the Original, which was founded in 1939. “It’s open to women now and everybody’s happy with it,” White says of the league he and others are trying to preserve.

“My dad has been secretary since 1991,” said Kim Grope, Burt’s daughter. “He joined the league in 1971 and, since 1981, hasn’t missed a Tuesday of bowling,” she said. “That’s quite a record,” she said of the 30-year span.

Apparently, Grope knows her dad.

“When there’s a birthday on bowling nights, I tell my wife I have to celebrate on another day,” White said.

Chestnut’s 835

Don Chestnut’s 299-835 electrified Hively’s Sportsman bowlers at Amron on March 14, when John Dasen had an 11-in-a-row 290.

Scot Hueber’s 802 led Bob’s Bail Bonding at Wedgewood on Feb. 28.

Kelley-Robb Classic secretary Ted Bundy had a 300 game at Bell-Wick on March 10.

Teri Haefke’s 290-710 led C-G Pro Shop Ladies Trio at Wedgewood on March 8, when Grace Sciarra’s 279-705 was second-best.

Bill Diver’s 11-in-a-row 290 and 759 topped Hively’s Doubles at Amron on March 8, when Tammy Diver’s 278-742 led Hively’s women.

Erin Whitehouse’s 766 was best in Thursday Matchplay Ladies at Amron on March 10.

Senior tournament

The team of Tim Kornbau and Clarence Dash scored 2686 to win the 2011 Youngstown Senior Doubles Tournament held at Bell-Wick and McKinley Lanes.

The runner-up duo of Bill Ifft-Dave Ifft tallied 2609, while Mike Dorbish-Neil Guerrieri followed with 2597. Barb Bartoletti-Mike Toda placed fourth with 2576 and Jim Waring-John Larson (2567) finished fifth.
