Banks has four hits in loss to Xavier
MASON
Youngstown State had a season-high 15 hits, but the Penguins’ bullpen allowed 10 runs in a 14-5 loss to Xavier at Prasco Park.
YSU led 3-1 after two innings, and the Penguins tied the score at 4-4 in the top of the fifth. The Penguins went to the bullpen, and the Musketeers scored six runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth.
The Penguins stranded 12 runners, including nine in the first four innings. They also grounded into two inning-ending double plays in the first five frames.
“We left too many runners on base early, and that kept us from building on the lead that we had,” YSU coach Rich Pasquale said.
Jeremy Banks finished 4-for-5, and Neil Schroth was 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Phil Lipari, Jonathan Crist and David Saluga all had two hits apiece.
For Xavier, Daniel Rod was 3-for-4 with four RBIs to lead Xavier.
YSU scored three runs on four hits in the top of the second. Singles from Crist and Schroth and a walk to Greg Dissinger loaded the bases with nobody out. Lipari hit a RBI single, David Leon drew a walk to force in a run and Drew Dosch hit a RBI single. Saluga tied the score at 4-4 in the fifth inning with a pinch-hit single.

After the Penguins added three runs in the top of the second, Caroline Krombach, who went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, hit a two-run single with the bases loaded to extend the Penguins’ lead to 6-0. Thomas then followed with a three-run blast to extend the lead to 9-0.
YSU extended its lead to 12-4 in the sixth inning, keyed by a run-scoring double by Kim Klonowski and bases-loaded walks by Krombach and Thomas.
YSU scored twice more in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Kim Klonowski and a run-scoring single by Samantha Snodgrass.
Against Columbia, the Penguins jumped out to a 4-1 after scoring two runs in the first and two more in the second.
