On Sunday, the first day of spring, Dairy Queen is having a Free Cone Day at participating area restaurants in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties. For every free five-ounce cone served on Free Cone Day, DQ customers will be invited to make a donation to Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley, the local Children’s Miracle Network hospital. In 2010, local DQs raised over $11,000 for Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley. All money raised locally through Children’s Miracle Network stays in the Mahoning Valley.
Suicide prevention
HUBBARD
The Hubbard Public Library is offering “More than Sad: Suicide Prevention Education for Teachers and Other School Personnel” on April 30 at 10 a.m. at the library. The workshop, developed by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, in partnership with the New York State Office of Mental Health, is free and open to the public, but registration is required by April 15. Included in the workshop are two films and a manual that integrates the films into a comprehensive suicide- prevention program. Registration forms are available at the library circulation desk. Medicare coverage
NEW YORK, N.Y.
People eligible for Medicare but who have not yet enrolled in Medicare Part B should do so before March 31 when the General Enrollment Period (GEP) ends. Part B of Medicare covers a range of services, including doctor visits and outpatient therapy. Consumers who enroll during the GEP will have coverage effective July 1, 2011. People whose Initial Enrollment Period has passed or do not qualify for a Special Enrollment Period need to enroll by March 30, or they will not be able to enroll until Jan. 1, 2012, for coverage effective July 1, 2012.
Free screenings

UPMC Horizon is offering free community cardiovascular screenings April 2 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Giant Eagle Pharmacy in Hermitage. Dr. Elizabeth Piccione, a cardiologist with the UPMC Cardiovascular Institute at UPMC Horizon, will be available to answer questions. The UPMC Horizon Wellness Center will provide BMI and body-fat analysis, while McGonigle Ambulance will conduct blood-pressure screenings. Humility of Mary Health Partners is offering two Women in Touch programs from 5 to 7:30 p.m. March 30 at Mr. Anthony’s, 7440 South Ave., Boardman; and April 7 at Leo’s Ristorante, 7042 East Market St., Howland.The topic of the programs is “Making Your Home a Healthy Home.” Participants will learn about common household hazards such as lead, mercury, arsenic, carbon monoxide, radon, mold and volatile organic compounds, as well as factors that contribute to air quality and health, and what to do to prevent or reduce exposure.
