‘Irishman’ mob film at Tinseltown

Staff report

“Kill the Irishman,” a movie about the rise and fall of infamous Cleveland mobster Danny Greene, opens Friday at Tinseltown in Boardman.

Although Youngstown mobsters played a key role in killing Greene, the city reportedly gets only a couple of mentions in the film, which is set in Cleveland. Greene muscled in on mafia rackets before he was killed in Cleveland in 1977.

“Kill the Irishman,” more than 13 years in the making, was filmed in Detroit. It stars Ray Stevenson as Greene, with Christopher Walken and Val Kilmer. Directed by Jonathan Hensleigh, it is based on the book “To Kill the Irishman” by Rick Porello. It opened March 11 in limited release.
