The Youngstown Foundation has awarded $24,929 to the Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corp. (YNDC) for the purchase of a polycarbonate greenhouse with a ventilation system, post-harvest cooling facility and solar-photo-voltaic equipment to power the system. The purpose of the greenhouse, to be located at YNDC’s urban farm currently under development, is to train city residents in economically viable market- gardening techniques, encourage business creation on vacant land, develop successful microenterprises and conduct research in partnership with and partner organizations.

The Visiting Nurse Association of the Greater Youngstown Area received a $241,850 grant from The Youngstown Foundation to support Operation Search and Help, a program that assists with medical needs of children in Mahoning County and the local vicinity with disabilities and special needs. The National Safety Council, Northern Ohio Chapter, located in the Ohio One Building at 25 E. Boardman St., Suite 343, is offering several health and safety classes April 13. Pre-registration is required two weeks in advance of the class. Call 330-747-8657. The classes are: CPR/AED Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation and Automated External Defibrillator Course, Adult/Child/Infant, 8 a.m. The fee is $32; First Aid: 1 p.m. The fee is $32; Bloodborne/Airborne Pathogens Course: 4 p.m. The fee is $25.

Youth Day of Caring

The United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley is seeking youth volunteers for its 10th annual United Way Youth Day of Caring on April 16 from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. The event, sponsored by Farmers National Bank, is an annual community-service project in which student groups from area high schools, universities and church youth groups participate by completing tasks, odd jobs and other activities for area nonprofit social-service agencies. Family groups are also welcome to volunteer.
